インド・ヴァジパイ元首相の訃報

Cable of the condolence to the late Atal Bihari Vajpayee, former Prime Minister of India,

I have received with profound sadness the news of the demise of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayeeji, great leader of India.

I would like to express my most sincere condolence to the late Prime Minister’s family and to share the grief and the sense of loss of the entire nation of India.

I recall my visit to India in August, 2000 as incumbent Prime Minister of Japan, for the first time since 1990 when Prime Minister Toshiki Kaifu had made a visit to India. It was a great honor and privilege to have signed with Prime Minister Vajpayee an epoque-making declaration on “ Japan-India Global Partnership for the 21st Century”, which remains one of the most important agreements to define the new bilateral relationship between the two countries. This declaration constitutes an important basis between the two countries and has developed to be “the Special, Strategic and Global Partnership of today.

With my highest respect and sense of sorrow, I pray for the repose of the former Prime Minister.

私は、インドの偉大な指導者アタル・ビハリ・ヴァジパイ元首相がご逝去されたとの報を大きな悲しみをもって受け止めました。

私は、元首相のご遺族の皆様に深甚なる弔意を表しますとともに、インドの全国民の悲しみと喪失感を分かち合いたいと思います。

私は、2000年8月に行ったインド訪問、1990年に当時の海部俊樹首相が行って以来10年ぶりの訪印を想起いたします。この訪問の際、ヴァジパイ首相との間で画期的な「21世紀のための日印グローバル・パートナーシップ」宣言に署名したことを想起いたします。この宣言は日印両国間のもっとも重要な合意の一つとして日印関係の基盤となり、今日の「特別戦略的グローバル・パートナーシップ」の基礎をなすものであります。

私は、最高の敬意と悲しみのうちに、故元首相のために伏してお祈りを捧げます。
